What is Senior Focus?

A magazine format TV program created to provide information to Seniors (people 55+) on how to continue to enjoy life after they retire or turn 60.

Senior Focus focuses on ways to cope with aging and the events associated with aging. Showcases interviews with professionals who speak to the needs of Seniors as well as famous Seniors who are known both locally and nationally. And finally, highlights a variety of activities that Seniors throughout Michigan and the USA are involved in daily as they continue to live their lives to the fullest.

WHY SENIOR PROGRAMMING?

By the turn of the century there will be more than 35 million Americans over the age of 65.

"The nation within a nation is growing. It is populated by printers, lawyers, master machinists, architects, artists and entrepreneurs", according to Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., author of Age Wave. "The members of this group, already tempered by time, are smart, eager and ready for life as people half their age, and possibly a little less confused. This generation of elders is bolder, more powerful, has more savvy in the marketplace, more socially outspoken, and more politically forceful than any previous generation of elders on Earth."

This group of Seniors is like none ever seen before. They are no longer living a linear life with simple plans of enjoying the grandchildren and staying at home. These people are more mobile and as involved in their retirement as they were when part of the work force. This segment of society will continue to grow and become an even more important part of society and taking part in shaping their own lives, the marketplace and those to follow them.

Since the majority of present TV programming is aimed at the 18-35 age market, we feel it is time to address the needs, concerns and activities of the 55+ group. This group has been ignored, despite the fact that their discretionary spending ability is higher than any other group.

PROGRAM HOSTS
WHERE WE ARE SEEN

When we first began in 1990, our host was Lee Murray (Burke) who was known for her work on Radio and Television. Lee retired in 1995 after helping to create programs which were awarded "Best Senior Programming for 4 years. As well as hosting the Award Winning program on Alzheimer's "Will I Hear Them When They Call My Name?" and "Brain Attacks: All About Stroke".

Diane Mahon was host for our program for one year and contributed a great deal because of her talents and many contacts. We are sorry that she moved to South Carolina.

In 1996, Julia Spina Kilar willingly agreed to take on the responsibilities as Host. She has added much to the programs with her enthusiasm and her professional style. We are delighted to have Julia as part of the team! We look forward to the 1999 programs where we will meet her husband Ted Kilar - who went along with us to Minnesota to help cover the financial and medical subjects.

We have now completed over 200 half hour shows since July 1990.

Now in it's eighth season, Senior Focus has been bringing information and entertainment to viewers twice a week through TCI Cablevision of Oakland County, Michigan from 1990 until 1996. In addition, Senior Focus has been airing weekly on WTVS-TV Detroit, Channel 56 and MI PBS stations, for six years, reaching an audience that includes viewers in fourteen states and four foreign countries.

Beginning in the Fall of '95, Senior Focus has also been satellite-up linked to national Public Broadcast (PBS) stations who are members of NETA extending our audience to over 43 States.

And is available on Videocassette.

SENIOR FOCUS TEAM

Senior Focus is produced and directed by Maureen McCarthy. After retiring from teaching Maureen couldn't stay away from education. She found that she learned more each day from working with "so called" seniors - who gave her a renewed appreciation for life and a desire to help educate caregivers and others about the constant changes taking place in the world. She feels that she is educating a greater audience through TV and wouldn't give it up. "The joy of knowing that someone is watching and learning something that might change their life or way of living is too great a feeling to ever give up!"

Technical Director and Cameraman is John L. Walter. John has been in broadcast radio and television since 1960. He helped to create the first Video Deposition Company in Michigan, and also ran a Production Company for many years. His eye for the right shot, whether its from behind the camera or in the editing suite make him an important part of the team. And ability to know when the show is A-OK!

Joyce Rockafellow, our Newsletter Editor, our stumper and collector of people and things! Where would we be without this Senior Producer? Joyce brings her years of experience as a GM Executive to this program to keep us on our toes! She loves to "work the crowd" and collect all the cards and "goodies" from the various exhibits at the conventions. She also is a great interviewer. Not to mention a great contact for what's happening in the world of the Senior Centers.
