Jammed Garbage Disposal:

Tools and Materials:
Broom handle (or wood dowel)
1/4 inch allen wrench (this usually comes with the disposal at the time of purchase)

If your garbage disposal is jammed, you will first have to shut the power off to the unit. Either switch the circuit off to the disposal at the main electrical panel or unplug the unit from the wall under the sink.

Now take a broom handle or wood dowel and place it into the garbage disposal. Try to rotate the slinger (impeller blade) to break it loose. Try to rotate in a counterclockwise direction. Never put your hand down the disposal.

If the unit is still jammed then remove the wood dowel and take the allen wrench that came with the disposal and insert it into the center access hole at the bottom of the disposal. Move the wrench back and forth until the rotating disk breaks loose.

Rotate one full revolution in both directions. Remove the allen wrench and restore power to the unit.

Also at the bottom of the unit is a reset button. Push this button.

Then while running water turn the disposal back on. The disposal should operate.

If you find that food debris is plugging up the disposal and drain then try this trick. Take a tray of ice cubes. Run them through the disposal while it is running. This will freeze any food debris. Now run warm water through the disposal. The food solids should break up and flush out of the disposal and trap.
