Norwegian Genealogical Society Norway
A NOTE ON THE NORWEGIAN EMIGRANT MUSEUM GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY. One very important and expanding part of the museum's documentation section are the records of the Norwegian Emigrant Museum Genealogical Society. Genealogy is an abiding interest in Norway. Throughout the country, individuals and groups will be found who do serious and detailed genealogical research within their particular municipality or local geographic area. In many cases, they continually receive questions concerning Norwegian genealogy from overseas.
FINDING EXACT AND ACCURATE GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION Finding exact and accurate genealogical information in Norway often requires an expert and intimate knowledge of the history, the people and the place names within relatively limited geographical areas. By the very nature of things, such expert personal knowledge about every municipality in the country cannot be available at a national institution. Yet the information is available, if one can find the right person "to talk to" in each local area.
NEED FOR A CENTRAL "CLEARING HOUSE" In 1989, a group of such genealogists - all with a special interest in emigration - felt a need for a central "clearing house" of genealogical questions related to emigration. With this in mind, and with the cooperation of the museum, they founded the Norwegian Emigrant Museum Genealogical Society during the fall of 1990.
YOUR CLEARING HOUSE, SECRETARY AND TREASURER For a fee, the members of the society will answer questions and conduct genealogical searches for customers inside and outside Norway. The museum's role is to be the society's clearing house, secretary and treasurer. Upon receiving an inquiry, either from Norway or from overseas, the museum notes it and sends it on to a genealogist with the necessary local expertise. When the genealogical work is done, the answer is sent to the museum, copied for the museum archives, and then sent on to the customer.
In this manner, the museum concentrates its efforts on finding the right informants or genealogists in each geographical area, and directing inquiries to these persons. In the long run, we feel that this results in much more accurate information for the genealogical "customer", than if the museum itself were to attempt to answer every question which arrives from around the world.
